Sales tax on a private sale

6% state sales tax on the full price, plus the county discretionary surtax (0% to 2%) on the first $5,000 only. Paid at the tax collector when you title the car. Exempt: true gifts (no money, no assumed loan), transfers between spouses, divorce settlements and distributions to heirs (Rule 12A-1.007). Tax paid to another state on a car you bring to Florida is credited.

Example: $8,500 car in Orange County (0.5% surtax): $510.00 state tax + $25.00 surtax = $535.00, plus the $75.25 title fee.

Registration and plate

Registration is charged by vehicle weight and plate type and varies; the counter quotes it. If you have no Florida plate to transfer, add the $225 initial registration fee.
